Ice Dams: Why Chipping Ice Off the Eave Every Year Isn't the Fix

An ice dam forms when heat escaping from the living space into the attic warms the underside of the roof enough to melt snow sitting on it. That meltwater runs down the roof until it reaches the eave, which stays cold because it overhangs the heated part of the house, and it refreezes there — building a ridge of ice that backs up water under the shingles behind it.

Why removing the ice doesn't fix the cause

Chipping or melting an ice dam off the eave addresses that winter's symptom, not the reason it formed. If the attic is still losing heat the same way next winter, the dam comes back, and repeated chipping risks damaging shingles in the process — which is exactly the kind of work that shifts from snow removal into roof repair.

The actual fix is upstream

Reducing attic heat loss — better insulation at the attic floor, sealing air leaks from the living space, and ventilation that keeps the underside of the roof deck closer to outdoor temperature — is what stops ice dams from forming in the first place. That's an insulation and ventilation project, not a snow removal service.

What we can do versus what we can't

We can remove snow and existing ice safely from a roof or eave when the load or the dam itself is a concern. We don't repair roofing, gutters, or attic insulation and ventilation — that's referred to the specialists who handle it, because trying to solve an insulation problem with a snow shovel just means doing it again next winter.

A reasonable annual approach in the meantime
